Tommy Ashman and Elliott Tucker - Founders of Movement Mender LLC
The Hip Helper was created by accident.
Hi, this is Elliott, the guy on the right. I'm not a physician or doctor or any sort of qualified professional in the health and fitness industry... I'm a car guy and I run a business that makes car parts.
In 2022 I wanted to try a hip hook product I saw online but thought it was too expensive for what it was. I didn't want to support a product I knew could be (and maybe should be) more affordable.
My car business has the resources to design and test small plastic products, so I designed my own hip hook.
It started as a pyramid shape with a smooth, rounded top. I 3D printed it. I gave it a try and it worked surprisingly well.
I got more invested in the project, refining the design further and further. I went through half a dozen design and manufacturing changes.
And at this point I was happy with what I created. It worked well and was helping some tightness I had in my low back. I added the name "Hip Helper" as a final touch, because that's what it did, it helped with some stuck fascia in my hips.
I shared it with friends and family to try it out. Tommy (on the left in the photo) was one of those friends. He has a business making custom exercise equipment (giant swords) in Los Angeles. As a former stretch therapist, he immediately recognized the potential of the Hip Helper.
I continued refining the design with feedback from physical therapists, gym owners, and personal trainers. We took it to trade shows and local gyms and influencer gatherings, until we arrived at the final product you see today.
The Hip Helper. It's still 3D-printed, made of just a few ounces of plant-based material, and is so satisfying to use. It's a fraction of the cost competitor products, too, which was always the point.
That's the story of how a passion project turning into a viral muscle massage tool. I hope it makes an impact on your life (hips) the way it has on mine.
